Am I about to break a rule here... July 26th
Politics is something I always thought I would avoid when I started writing this (as my previous writing, TheTruth Site, was mostly on that slant), but sometimes things just seem to merge together. I'm still going to try to avoid it, but let's see what happens.
It's new release Tuesday for those into either video games or DVD/BlueRay movie releases, so let's see what we have. Source Code came out today (and it was just released in theatres in April, no less), and other than BlueRay releases of Animal House and the Blues Brothers, not much to speak of there. So, how about the video games, maybe they will be better? Maybe I should had looked at these before starting to write (hence the old stream of thought writing style, it may pen you into writing about boring items), with only Catherine (a japanese style manga game, and the Arcade releases (download only) of From Dust and Venture.
Americas' Got Talent was on last night (as least the replay from Wednesday nights results show, and the acts for the most part you expected to go thru made it on to the next round.) Of course, the President had to come on immediately thereafter to ruin that enjoyment.
Ok, ok, I tried to avoid it long enough, but no matter how we try to slice it, it's not going away. As alluded to earlier, President Obama went to the airwaves last night at about 9pm eastern time to pitch the reason why to go the way he wishes for the upcoming "bang the head on the wall" moment for the debt the United States has built up over the years (several trillion under his own watch) coming up as most state on August 2nd. Just thereafter, the head of the Republican party went on air to lay out his side's well, side in the issue. Here is where I get rather tired of hearing it all and well, thinking as always nothing will get done and the proverbial can will just get kicked down the road.
The problem with two sides debating on an issue as important as this one is a simple one. Both sides have to be dealt in, to use our poker references here, but only one side is holding any cards (or chips) for this matter. The Republicans, like them or hate them, has their hole cards and have pushed their chips in with their plan to "cut, cap and balance" to get the government to get rid of a little of it's spending, while pairing that with some room in the debt ceiling to keep the game moving, and to get a balanced budget to prevent this from occuring in the future. The president, on the other hand, hasn't put out a single thing, instead leaving it to a very late in the game proposal drawn up by Harry Reid to counter on the other end. This only coming in the eleventh hour of the debate, all the rest of the time has been used to trash their competition out of their proposal instead of coming up with their own. We once again get a similiar setup to another major issue during this president's term, that of course being the health care debate/bill.
What gets me, as well as many many out there, is this. While it is fine to have differing views on how something is to be done, making your entire argument to be why your opposition is bluffing without even having cards in his hands, so to speak, is NOT fine. During this debate, we need a free flow of ideas to get to something that'll work for the nation. Burying your head and just shouting "they are wrong, they are wrong!" without something to say what therefore would be right is definitely what shouldn't be happening at a time like this. Just think for a minute what our founding would had been if say Thomas Jefferson would of been shouting to George Washington that his ideas were moronic, without offering anything in return. We wouldn't even had remembered Jefferson today. Makes you wonder who out of today's mess we might remember in the future. That is, if we have a future the way this is going.
So, with all that said, getting off the soapbox, so to speak. If you want to use it, it's here for you. Shoot me an email at support@myusapoker.com and I promise to get to each and every single one of you. Until then, pray this gets resolved (and stops me from having to do this again.)
What you don't expect can happen... July 18th
Hi again, see sooner than before for another post (and will be keeping up this time), so let's get down to business, so to speak.
The tournament I attended at the Horseshoe ended up with me scoring 14,020 in my top 2 sessions (top payout per hit on the machine was 5,000 for 3 Double symbols. The scores of 6,960 and 7,060 were my two scoring rounds (Friday night, and Saturday session one) to make those scores. When it was all said in done, however, it left me in 73rd place with only the top 60 being guaranteed a spot in the finals for the money.
So, as they say in life, I was left with a pickle of an issue to figure out. There was one final round that could be played to better one's overall score, costing $100 in order to participate in that round. The goal to meet to break the top 60 was about 14,500, meaning I would need a score that would better my lower of the two scores (6,960) of a minimum of 500 or so points (meaning a score of 7,500+ would be needed) to have a shot of landing me in that top 60. While thinking about it over at the table version of hold'em that the Horseshoe had (got 2 bounties in the only poker tournament, but nothing to write home about other than my JJ losing to an A-4 on the river hitting an Ace... Damn Barry Greinstein.) Getting back to the situation at hand, however, while on that table, was able to turn a Js-9s until a nice little straight flush for about $450, so I decided to let it go to luck, so to speak, as for those who didn't qualify via the top 60 route was put in a drawing for twenty (20) spots as wild cards to get in the final as well. As our table was virtually all full of tournament players, we sat around as they starting calling the names... One, two, three, nine names were called without anything coming out to make anyone at the table happy. Name number ten, however, had a real great sound to the name, even though I had never expected them to use my legal name instead of what I normally go by, as I got called via the wildcards, back into the finals, drawing the first of two sessions on machine #20.
The problem with that, is that #20 seemed to be a real real dog, and even with a ten minute final session, only managed 5,400 points from the machine for the bottom of the finals pack, qualifying for the minimum prize of $250 in "free slot play", which I was able to play through and keep about $210 of the $250 value. However, it was a nice change of pace I hadn't done before, and if they were to invite me back for another run, I'd be willing to come down and play.
On other news, ClubWPT shot me a press release while I was in Omaha, trumpeting their latest member counts in the face of Black Friday/Blue Monday. I know many over there, and I do honestly think this might not be the best move for them. In the current limelight being cast, I'd personally want to keep a lower profile than a higher one, at least from the company side at the present juncture. Also, the HPT will be kicking back up soon with the WSOP finishing itself up to it's November nine (Phil Hellmuth has got to be seeing Ben Lamb in his sleep currently, regardless how the kid finishes up), with it's first EpicPoker tour stop in just a few weeks, and the first actual HPT stop after the WSOP layover occuring at the Turning Stone in Verona the week after (Aug 8-15). Again, best of luck for another positive HPT swing thru the summer and into the fall.
So there it is, a quick recap of the past weekend. As always, if you have any questions, wanted to know anything, what have you, shoot us a line at support@myusapoker.com today and I'll be sure to get to each and every one of them! Until then, you really called with that?
God it's been a LONG LONG LONG time... July 12th
Hello everyone, I know it's been a long long time since we've last conversed. With Black Friday (and the following Blue Monday) that occured in the online world, it did drain a lot of spark out of me as of late. However, as in everything, life does go on, so shall we.
With Stars, Full Tilt, Absolute, Ultimate Bet, and Doyle's Room among the targets of those aforementioned events, there isn't many alternatives left for an American who wants to play online poker. Yes there are subscription sites like Pureplay and ClubWPT (the latter picking up a lot of commercial time that likely was held by FTP/Stars) as of late, and just checking over in their lobby their numbers have seemed to blossom. When I won my seat at the WPT Invitational last year from that site, I had to beat around 500 runners for that tournament. They now average around 1400 or so in their nightly tournaments. It just doesn't feel right, paying a "subscription fee" to play poker, instead of buy-ins for whatever event(s) you wish to play, but I wish them the best of luck there. I know a lot of folks over at the WPT offices, and wish them nothing but the best in any endeavor that they do.
On a more local front, the regional tournament group, the Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) got bought by Federated gaming (FS+G) and made a companion league for their new tour, the Epic Poker Tour, with Annie Duke being the face of Epic. I wish them as well the best of luck, anything to expand the poker world is definitely a good thing. I just hope they don't cannibalize the HPT, as their $1,000-$1,500 price point is perfect to get regular folks into the game of poker, which is what it needs, especially with the aforementioned Black Friday/Blue Monday.
As for me, I'm going to be on a roadtrip this weekend, leaving tomorrow for Omaha, Nebraska for the Horseshoe casino down there, for of all things a four day slot tournament. Yes, I know what you got to be thinking, a slot tournament?!?!?! Four days at that, really? It seems they run these tournaments two or three times a year, with a $500 buyin and payout around $100,000 in cash/free play during each tournament. Now I'm with you in that I wouldn't pay $500 to play a slot tournament, but I got a mailer that let's just say I couldn't refuse. It offered to not only pay for my hotel free during the entire event, but also offered to pay 100% of the buy-in for the tournament as well, making this effectively a freeroll for me. With those odds, I couldn't pass it up, so Omaha bound I will be after my work day today.
So there it is, a quick recap of myself, life and poker. I'll be seeing you all weekend here (as each slot round is only 5-10 minutes) so I'll probably a lot of swimming, relaxing time available this weekend. So if you have any questions, wanted to know anything, what have you, shoot us a line at support@myusapoker.com today and I'll be sure to get to each and every one of them! Until then, have a great day, shall we?

7:31pm Twitter is back up, and from the question bag (accessible by mailing support@myusapoker.com)
Q: How is the play in this year (2011) WBCOOP compare to last year's WBCOOP?
A: The play seems to be a lot more tight, more sane so far. Who knows if that will stay that way, as were only 90 minutes in.
If your want your question answered, shoot your question over at that email address now!
7:22pm Like last years WBCOOP, we crashed Twitter again... the Whale being held up by the little twitter birdies is on the page. :)

I am in, and let's rock as we're going to do this live... Keep an eye and rail along as we did last year, any questions get them into support@myusapoker.com
An required post... Jan 23rd
A new years, but maybe an old focus... Jan 5th 2011
Well, 2010 is in the books, and as we approach the new year I'm actually starting to look back into our game of choice, poker. The WBCOOP is upcoming soon, and I'm getting my hat in the ring for the event, starting on the 24th of this month. As usual, we'll live rail the events, and hope to have you with us. I'm getting called to go out, so until then, have a great day.
Only 100% more fun... Dec 15th
Professional poker player Annie Duke gave me a book recommendation to read a while back, and with my time away from the table I've actually got to reading some of it. The book, "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto" by Michael Pollan.
Now with all the diets, fads, books, and ways to lose weight and otherwise be more well maintained in life, Annie directed me to here as a way she gets a focused point in life, whether in diet or in life, and it definitely followed her tweets last year against high fructose corn syrup that she was on last summer.
Michael goes on into staying away from trying to typecast foods into their nutrient bases, and more as to what the actual food is, as Michael says there was a major turn-away from actual "food" in the late 70s and eighties starting with getting rid of the "imitation" tag on food-stuffs.
As I go thru, I may regale more about the book, but if you cant wait, go get it today, and let Annie know what you think. She's always reachable on twitter, and like most poker players, she does answer her tweets.
Until then, stay safe this holiday season all.
A new leaf... Dec 1st
So here we all, and I still really haven't played much poker at all, so I could write about politics, but that would break one of the rules I started with, and that was to attempt to avoid politics and religion as much as possible.
Let's get into some things. One, why must the boys and girls on the other side of the pond, the UK, get the best television gameshows? Over there, they got "The Chase", "Divided", etc, while we get rehashes of Don't Forget the Lyrics (with a whole whopping five songs for a show from the MySpace Karaoke) and Fifth Grader (that removed the fifth grader questions)!!!
Okay, okay, I promise to have thoughts more together next time, any topics send them in, let's make this more interactive this holiday season. Good bye!
Where to go from here... Nov 21st
You know, after the deer and the HPT, I really haven't played much poker at all so far since that night, and I'm starting to wonder about something. Is this what I want to do with my life? I'm going to give the holiday to think it over, but the real question then would become this. If I move away from the game that "takes a moment to learn, but a lifetime to master", what am I going to write about now? Any suggestions, shoot them over to us as always at support@myusapoker.com. Until then, have a great day!
The HPT and the Meswauki (Final)... Nov 7th
Some days it rocks, and other days it well, doesn't. I played well during the HPT main event, nailing a nice double up with a flush hit, and after doing well for hours on end, pocket Queens of mine just had to run into pocket rockets (Aces) of my opponent in seat 3. It was one of those moments that just wasn't anyway to avoid it, as the flop came down K-J-T to seal this deal.
Now, if that wasn't bad enough, as the saying goes, it had to pour as going at 55mph on a county road back to the hotel in Toledo me and a deer met together in a nasty altercation, leaving my vehicle in a wreck, and the poor deer dead on the side of the road..
However, looking at it, it could of gone a lot worse. I could of donked the tournament, I could have rolled the vehicle or be physically hurt, but none of those occured. When I've had more time to think about it all, I'll come back to it, but now I just want to roll into bed.. Have a good nite all.
The HPT and the Meswauki (Part two)... Nov 6th
First thing's first since folks have been asking. Yes, Darvin Moon was in attendance, and as personable as heck actually. Unlike some professionals, Moon is one you could really get into chatting with for a long time and enjoy yourself, whether it be about poker or one of many many other categories.
As for myself, I'll be buying in to the event today, but will be getting a refund from the after the satellite NL Hold'em cash game, which made me profit quite handsomely. It seems that while the state has a law that requires gamblers to be 21 years of age, the Meswauki allow 18 year olds in to play, and yes they are juicy as heck to take money off of. Something makes me think they thought they were playing PokerStars freerolls. Hopefully, nobody ever tells them how to play, or at least they keep their money until the next game they play :)
The main event starts this afternoon, so I'll get you all updates when they are available. Until then, here's to hoping there will be good news to return with.
The HPT and the Meswauki (Part one)... Nov 5th
With the Heartland Poker Tour right around the corner, actually tomorrow will be the opening day for the main event as I write here from a little town called Toledo in Iowa. Tonight has my one chance at getting into that main event on the cheap, as the HPT offers a 1 in 5 advance satellites for their main events on their tour. Poker's "teddy bear" so to speak, Darvin Moon, is supposed to be in attendance tonight and tomorrow, and I'll let you know more on that when I return the Meswauki casino here within the next hour.
If you remember the Vegas slogan, "whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas", there is a similiar one out here it seems.... "Whatever happens in the cornfield, had better stay in the cornfield." Something makes me think I'm going to find out why over this weekend. If you are there, stop by and as always on this trips, the first drink is on me, but until then, have a good nite.
The Road widens... Nov 3rd
When last we left the retrospective, I was realizing not to think the path was done (hence the renaming of the blog), and I needed a challenge to prove if it was for naught or not. The World Series of Poker released their circuit event schedule, moving the Omaha event from February to August, and dropping most of the buy-in levels on the events to be more mid-western friendly. So it was decided that was the location for the road to cross paths again, this time at the World Series of Poker Circuit Event (WSOPCE) at the Horseshoe there in Omaha.
I planned on a weekend trip for the event, catching two hold'em events and one omaha event during the Fri-Sun trip. This time, being in a property I've been to before, combined with the "big event" jitters from the WPT being behind me, things started in earnest with buying $600 of tournament chips for $500, coming out a C-note ahead before I began.
Friday's tournament, while uneventful and not a profitable game, did last for about eight hours before going out to the rail. While not making any money in the event, running that long with a bad string of cards still taught loads to me, letting me know I could do this. I would get that chance on Saturday.
Saturday's event was more successful than the shoe had expected, putting part of the tournament into the corner of the main poker room instead of inside the Whiskey Roadhouse where the events were being held. As such, the event for the first couple hours played more like a big stack small casino event (consolidating tables just among the four tables in the poker room away from the main tournament). I had doubled up early on, but with the short table play due to twelve of us left in the poker room, the chips had bled back off before we finally got down to ten in the poker room and finally got moved into the Roadhouse to resume with the rest of the tournament. Upon our entry into the Roadhouse, our one table remained intact long enough to deal one hand, me getting pocket Queens on that hand, and doubling back up, before the table was broke down. From that point on I was no more than a passing fad in many tables during the night, being moved from the break table to the next to break table, never really getting my legs to stretch out. However, at about midnight, the fateful moment drew near, the best moment and the worst all at the same time in a tournament. It was time for the bubble.
Now, for those who haven't played a WSOPCE event, let me explain as the bubble is NOT handled like it would at the main event or at PokerStars. Jimmy (tournament director at the WSOPCE) explained to us an entire orbit would be played out, and while the tournament clock would not stop, we were to remain at the same level until the bubble bursted. Anyone who busted during the orbit of the tables would be considered on the bust position, with more than one bust would split the lower payout and the $0 bubble position evenly, regardless of starting stack or when they busted. Play went around one full orbit on each table, and surprisingly, nobody had taken the walk of shame. So, a second orbit was ordered up, again staying at the same blind level, even though the clock had indeed signaled a higher blind. During this orbit, two players busted out, so they split the one cash spot, each taking home less than their buy-in, but I guess better than leaving with absolutely nothing, as we resumed play at the higher blind level after that second orbit.
We played around then till the 2am clock sounded, and the remaining fifteen of us bagged up and signed off for the nite, scheduled to return at 2pm for the finals. I was in the zone, as they say, nothing was going wrong, the correct poker plays were what was coming out of my mouth and via my hands. I felt great that night back at the Holiday Inn.
Sunday came, and we started eliminating players to get ourselves down to eleven, when an interesting two hand swing came up on our table. The previous chip leader who has taken a few hits was down to his about last $65,000 in chips with blinds at $3k/$6k when he shoved all-in ahead of me, the new chip leader, and one other player. The chip leader and I had already folded before the all-in came in, and the lone player was the only one left to stand in his way. He pondered for about 3 minutes before deciding to lay it down, saying after the chip leader asked what he had that he had folded A-K. The chip leader then went on about he would of definitely of called that hand, and the discussion broke down to what the minimum hand would of been to call him in that position, with the answer being left on Ace-nine.
Next hand, sure enough the same player pushed all-in again, and this time I looked down to see, surprisingly, Ace-nine suited. To call him would only be about a third of my stack (as he was at about $80,000 now, with me at $300,000). My mind told me to fold it, that it wasn't right, but I let myself up in the moment and pushed the $80,000 out in the pot, to see him flip pocket Kings up. No ace came on the board, doubling him up and setting him up for a life-saving (for him) runner runner when were at ten players, leaving me on a 3 hour slow march to ending in 10th place in the event, never being able to get my foot back in the door since that moment.
So, suffice it to say, play your own game, know what you are and are not capable of, and you will be on the road to the promised land. For 95% of the tournament, I was right there, but a momentary lapse brought it all down. With the recaps of the Commerce and the Horseshoe complete, tomorrow's article should be fun. Until then, go out and have some fun already.
The Road begins... Nov 2nd
It was a dark and stormy night (ok it wasn't stormy), but on a dark cold night in December, what I thought was my dream at the time was realized as thru ClubWPT.com, a trip to Commerce, California for the World Poker Tour celebrity invitational was mine. This was an event that kicked off the weekend prior to the LAPC main event for the World Poker Tour. Looking back now at some of my articles during that time, I can definitely tell I was enthusiastic for the adventure, but probably not ready for it.
Lets back up here just a little bit, and start much earlier. I had the built-up thought that if I ever had the chance, the opportunity to perform on poker's grandest stages, I would shine as bright as all the stars of today did at that stage. Having an invite to the last Tournament of Champions at the Orleans that Mike Sexton ran but unable to come up with the funds to travel to Vegas and buy-in, to winning a World Series Main event seat at the now defunct ACR to have the site change to a cash payout only of $1,866 the day after, I had, right or wrong, had the belief built up that I was there, but just needed a break. So when the Invitational trip came along, everything in me told me that now was the time.
So out to Los Angeles this mid-westerner flew in the middle of snow packed February, to meet with destiny, so to speak at a place called the Commerce. I got there early on Saturday, got my armband and seat assignment taken care of, and enjoyed the kobe beef meatballs and cheese squares (I am a midwestern kid, after all) and when the stroke of eight sounded, was firmly at my seat on table #10. Everyone else seemed to be having fun, enjoying themselves, while I was there acting like it was the November Nine, even so much as one player told me to relax, it's not time to be serious yet. Looking back, I should of took that advice, as shortly thereafter I would find myself down, and soon out for the count. A combination of trick plays, attempting to steal the pot way too often, led to my downright demise from the inside out.
The positive however, to draw out of that experience is this, don't over-estimate your own worth. The moment you get yourself believing in your own hype, you are done for. The belief it was my moment led me to not play the top game, to not sit back and wait for hands that I should have, and instead leaked off a mountain of chips I definitely should not have done. I definitely hope to get a chance to revenge that situation, but more on that as the road progresses. Our next stop will lead us to a Circuit event. Until then, keep your head above water, and your chips next to you!
The Road actually goes back on the road... Nov 1st
When this first started, the Road was actually a physical road leading to the World Poker Tour's WPT Invitational event at the Commerce casino in Los Angeles, California. Since then, the Road took a more philosophical approach about the ups and down of the never ending path of learning about the great game of poker.
Well…. the Road actually will be hitting the road again this weekend, heading to the Heartland Poker Tour's (HPT) Meskwaki event in Tama, Iowa. This is the HPT's last regular season event before the tour championship at the end of the month, and like the WPT, each tournament's winner gets a free buy-in/trip to the season ending event. Yes, I know that is far away, but one can't daydream about the best case scenario, can they?
During the week (and yes we will keep the schedule), we will have a new post in the run up to the Road hitting the road for the Heartland Poker Tour. We will be focusing on the event in particular (of course), but also the other things around it, the host nation (yes I said nation), the tour, and all other great items that lead up to the actual day (hopefully days) that will be the HPT Tama event. If there is anything you would love to hear about the event, the run-up to the competition, or anything else you would like to hear about send it to me at support@myusapoker.com.
Until later, have a great day, and don't let your pocket Aces get cracked.
NOT WHAT I HAD PLANNED... Oct 19th
Have you ever had one of those days, where something you planned just did not work out right? We'll today is when I come clean about one of mine. I had an acticle I started writing last week, and over the last week while that article has grown and grown, I have written myself into a corner with it, a corner which at the present time I do not see a way out of. It's beautiful, magnificent, but has led itself right into the big old land of nowhere. So until I can figure a way out to actually make the point I was going to in that article, it's going to sit on the shelf of unfinished works.
Now, let's get down to the old brass tacks, so to speak. I had started to write it due to my deep run last Thursday nite (Oct 7th) in the Poker Stars $5.50 2R1A event, finishing in 4th place and taking down over $1,900 for the effort. For those who don't know the acronyms, the 2R1A means a player can rebuy in the event up to two times (and can even take both at the same time if they are so inclined), and make one add-on at the end of the period (just over 60 minutes) if they wish to have more chips in front of them for the drive to the promised land. Let me tell you there is nothing like a good takedown to be able to re-energize someone. You should go and try it sometime, you will not be disappointed. From there, I was able to turn my sharkscope positive (Sharkscope being a measurement of your sit - n - go game play), running it from -$1,000 to a positive $800 in the chart in a mere 100 or so games. Finally, just last night, I run deep in the same event again, this time however being donked by two terrible outers late to finish in 28th place.
Sometimes I wonder if it is just about perspective as to how you are going to run that causes the outcome. There has been many of times i"ve been hanging out in my "home away from home" here at MyUSAPoker.com and heard someone come in and rail on how bad they have been running, how bad they have been bad beaten, and how it seems everyone and everything is out to conspire to make sure they do not win a single hand for the rest of their natural lives. Most of those players I notice usually either never make it out of the micro-stakes region, or even the freerolls that a site offers. Now, on the other side of the coin, folks who usually do not come in ragging on how they got beat (yes they may mention it), but don't go on and on and otherwise have a more upbeat/positive attitude on the situation, usually in my book are the winners at the table. Yes, they may as well never leave the micro-stake/freeroll section of the poker realm, but this group is more than content to be there, either knowing they can do well here and make some money, or know it's only a matter of time before they will move on to where they want to be. There are players I know that enjoy the low levels, and will more than likely play at that level for their entire lives, as that is what they enjoy and it is the game they can beat.
Now, with the HPT Tama event looming closer and closer (November 6th-7th), we will be looking back at the two previous road trips (Commerce and Horseshoe), and how each step of the road had it's own joys, perils, and lessons to be learned from the experience that makes the road worth traveling. Until next time, to borrow the WPT line, may your cards be live, and your pots be monsters.
WHERE IN THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN (AKA from the ashes)... Sept 11th
Ok, I wasn't thinking when I made that topic, but let's leave it at taking a moment to remember them and the day.
Alright, my poker life hasn't been the best as of late, and hence why I've been gone for awhile. However, coming to the realization of stepping off the road instead of taking it to whatever conclusion it will lead you to is not the way to go, I'm back on the poker horse, and back here.
So, let's get started... Since Omaha, NE is just down the road from where I live, I drove down for the opening weekend of the World Series of Poker Circuit Event there at the Horseshoe. I played in both Friday's and Saturday's games $345 buyin NLHE (got a guy who sold me $600 in tourney buyin chips for $500 when I was in the signup line, so that was nice to take a $100 discount!). Friday's game didn't go to well (was short most of the day/nite, but lasted until hour #8 until busting), but Saturday's game did go well, lasting 14 hours in day one, and until 4:30pm on day 2, finishing in the perverbial final table bubble position of 10th place for $1,700 and change. I didn't get back for the main event, but thats another car issue, so we'll leave that alone.
For now, the action is HOT and heavy over at PokerStars.com, with the WCOOP is in full swing (Stars version of the WSOP series) with sixty-two events, so there is definitely something for everyone there, regardless if you buy-in directly or win your way in via a satellite event. For all the WCOOP info, head over to my friends at PokerStars, and they'll be happy to fill you in!
While that is going on, they are also endeavoring on their 50,000,000,000-th hand celebration. (For those who are wondering how many commas that is, that would be their fifty billionth hand), and are running a ton of promotions for it, from a deposit freeroll, to every million hands being a celebration ring game hand, to 50 players SNGs at 1.10, 5.50, 12, 22 and 55 levels, each with a $50,000 prize pool split among winners at that level during the celebration.
So get out there, what your still doing reading here, and get in that action at Stars. More next time (most likely Monday), until then, gl in taking those bonuses down, just don't bust me while you do it!
Lookie, it's a Monday again... July 12th
Yah, we'll probably settle back in to a Monday update for the blog (unless things happen outside that need to be addressed), and this will be probably be good for both me and you (that way you don't have to guess when the next one is out).
Another weekend came and went without me having a live poker tour trip to take myself back on the physical road (this time it being for the NAPT event at the Bike in Bell Gardens, CA), being donked out with pocket ladies being buzz-sawed by pocket 6s. However, the rest of the weekend is more interesting to me to talk about at the present time (that, and the EPT event is this upcoming Sunday's trip).
Since we last talked, that last $48 went to the poker gods in the sky in a handful of failed $4.40 180s, and then a donk move in NL25 finishing the rest. After debating on it for the longest time if I should or not, I did decide to put $300 in on Stars Friday afternoon, and proceeded to work on the roll. When I came into Saturday's play, I was already down $100 of the $300, and was not liking this at all. I had the TV on and heard someone say, I forget what show it was on now, but the oft repeated phrase, "If at first you don't succeed, try try again." My mind, that crazy trap it is, kinked my head and say "Why?" Okay, I know some of you are like, we've followed you through a lot, Chris, but really you want us to make THIS leap? You gotta get me over the divide then, sir. Fair enough, my mind said, going immediately into many past experiences in my life, flashing them in the old noggin, and ending with "What is to make you think repeating the same action again is going to get you any DIFFERENT result?" You know, mind 'o friend of mine, you got a point. Continually calling with a slim draw is going to miraculously cause the deck to pull your three outer of the deck. Chasing that gutshot to the river is not going to cause that bankroll to swell up. This is where I had to come true with myself, after having that good run on the $3/$6 limit game on stars, my play had faltered into that "I can do nothing wrong" mentality that when I went back through the hands, found I was making way too many calls, way too many raises "praying" for a lack of a better term, that my miracle card would make it there by the end, making it all good.
So, after taking that honest evalulation of my last few weeks, triggered by a simple oft quoted remark that 99.5% of the world would of heard and let it wash right off them meaning absolutely nothing at all, I had a new focus to take my head into, working on that remaining $200 roll and building that old badboy up before it was too late. For that mission, I went back to where I found my bread and butter during my upswing, and that was the $52 Double or Nothing SNGs on the stars lobby.
For those who have never played one of these, let me explain. Ten players start the game at $1,500 chips each and play continues until five players remain, at which time all players are paid $100 and the game ends. So basically, its a simple "outlast" five folks and double your cash up game. I've found this to be a great game due to a lot of players not adjusting correctly to the end occurring at 5th (you don't NEED to be the chip leader to be paid here), making it with $1 in chips is just as good as making it with $5,000 in chips. While you have those players who mistakenly play the game like a regular SNG, you on the other hand have players who mistakenly over-nit up, expecting to blind out and make fifth place too. You do have to take your shots, but selective aggression is the real key here, making your moves, not risking much to take pots nobody else wants to contend for. Players will seriously tighten up around seven players remaining, and as long as you do not become a madman pushing in for every single pot, you should be fine outlasting two others to make that top 5. As such, I landed in moving that $200 back up to $500 by Sunday morning.
Since were getting a little long here, I managed to money in the 1/4 million for $42.50, and min cash in the TPL game, keeping myself in line for a top 30 league finish for a round 1 $7.50 ticket so far with two games remaining. A final table, or god forbid, a win can definitely change that, as I've been able to hang in the wings to make a top 10 jump with either of those two occuring. Until next time, go back and look at your play, you might be suprised on what you see. Good day :)
Retrospective, and a lot of catchup... July 6th
Hello all, and yes I know it's been a long time... Let me correct myself, it's been more like an eon since we've met for our little sabbaticals. So let's get started shall we? (You better get a drink, I'll be here for awhile)
Since we last talked, the wheels have fallen off the caboose, so to speak, with only moments of brilliance flashing out. The bankroll, at the present time, is like only $48 remaining at Stars. You might ask, with a right reasoning, as to what the heck happened, so let's get it out of the way, shall we. A poker player never likes recanting tales of woe (unless it can be shaped into a great "bad beat" story), but alas I'm not going to subject everyone to that. Suffice it to say variance took over, and when it did, I wouldn't believe it and started playing foolishly trying to counter variance's ebb and flow ways. (Even so much as to bump the stakes up to $5/$10, thinking would recover what was being ebb'd away, to another $500 ebbing down the river) It put me in a funk (and a major reason I stayed away from here, as I would have to confront the situation, and compound it with something I'm going to get to in just a moment). However, coming to realization of what happens is the only way to come to terms with what went right, what went horribly wrong, and what can be done to maximize the correct plays, while minimizing the wrong ones. (LIKE NOT BUMPING UP STAKES TO FOOLISHLY CHASE!!!) Lesson learned there :)
Okay, now I know you are thinking..... I'll be back later... What??? You want to know what the other thing that compounded it was? You didn't think I was going to leave you without that, did you? Drinks refreshed, right? Let's get down to business.
As I write this article, day 1B of the World Series of Poker main event is about to get underway (out of 4 day 1s), and as I have said many times previously anyone who plays poker with any seriousness strives, dare say it, dreams of playing on the grandest stage this game can offer, the main event at the one and only World Series of Poker. (Yes, I know there is a WSOPE, but we're talking about THE one...) Pokerstars had been running satellites, super satellites and any other kind of tournaments trying to qualify as many as physically possible to be a part of the Stars "army" for the main event this year, and I was trying there myself to nab one of those lovely seats at the event there as well. After failing at a handful (more like 15) satellites, I figured my last greatest chance to do so would be in the WSOP 200, one single tournament at stars giving away at least 200 WSOP ME seats at a $370 buyin. This of course meant having to find some way to win a $370 seat to get in that game for me, so daily (only went out of the sats and at this in the last week), trying in the super sats to get into the $370 event. On Thursday, the dream was realized as the "A" game shined thru in a glimmer of greatness and piled thru the field to get that $370 seat in that WSOP 200 event. Sunday came for the event, and I was ready. Drink to the left of me, chips to the right of me (poker chips, not potato chips), ready to get thru the nearly 9,000 player field to get one of 252 seats to the main event (that was the total number of seats that the prize pool covered). I came into the event, while wanting to make it happen, probably not 100% believing deep down that I could go thru the star-packed field to make it happen (even though when I was playing at the time I felt that was the case), to looking six hours later on the edge looking down into the valley of the promised land, only a scant few away from having the biggest Road experience EVER! Out of the nearly 9k that started the event, we were looking at the last 350 players remaining in the field. Over 8,500 gone, and I will say I was starting to feel it. For that six hours, I got to get a little insight (I did say little) into how competitors in the grandest match that poker can offer must feel. In the end, I got to experience what I can definitely now say I do not wish to anyone, to be soooooooo close, just about able to taste and smell the glory, and yet have it snatched away from your grasp just before the promised land. That REALLY stung, and took awhile to come back from, even with the "A" game that was played there as well.
Regardless of all that, I've come to realize that there is not a better time than now to redouble the efforts and make something happen. PokerStars is running freerolls right now to get into the NAPT Los Angeles (actually Bell Gardens, CA) at the Bike, the LAPT event coming up, the PokerStars Big Game, and the return of the PokerStars Million Dollar Challenge. In addition, MicroMania is on for July there, where micro-limit ring players are be bonused with extra FPPs for the rake there, daily $1.10 MTTs with a grand added, $1.10 50 player SNGs with a share of $100,000 to the winner(s), and a weekly trip added $1.10 MTT (last week was the LAPT event, this Sunday is the NAPT LA).
Again, today is a great time to be traveling the road. Have a great nite!
What a difference an hour makes... May 20th
I know, I know, two posts in back to back days, you'd think I was going to Commerce again. While that is currently not happening, this road of poker (and life for that matter) really can give you some curve balls. Let me explain a little and you can know where I am coming from.
As I wrote "One good deed..." yesterday in the moments before leaving work, my plans were just to sit back, relax and watch some TV and enjoy myself. You know, take a night off from poker that I've been playing non-stop since the local ISP got my internet connection back to a stable connection. As all good plans go, however, I sat down at what looked like to be a rather juicy $3/$6 game on Stars, and immediately proceeded to get drawn out on left and right, my bluffs called without thought to their own hands, and was quickly approaching $1,400 in the bankroll again (down $200). At that moment, my mind was already drawing up the article on doubting yourself, variance, and all that good stuff, when, man, I was really doubting myself right there, wasn't I. I knew the table was ripe (from research done before sitting), I had folks who were -$5 to -$9k in $3/$6 limit telling me how bad a player I was, and if that was the real idea of these habitual losers, no reason in the world would anyone want to leave them and their game, would they? I kept a solid head, reloaded a little so I wouldn't be shy of bets when the hands come, and would be perfectly ready for the rebound. I fought back, clawed my way back in the game, and when I left the game I had made back the $200 down and left $37.00 to the good on 133 hands.
I know what your thinking, its good to get the $200 back, but at the end of the line, the net result +$37 for a game you said was good and ripe isn't much (6 BBs). I thought about that as I had some dinner (and some Dog the Bounty Hunter on A&E) and when dinner was over, I did find myself reaching for the laptop again, and to my shock and suprise, the same table was back, the only real change to the entire table was that the seat I had been in had become a merry-go-round, having no fewer than 6 players sit down, play and lose, and leave. There were a few players on the list for the table, so I sat down at an $11 18man Sit 'n Go while waiting for my name to be called on the ring game. I know I said it before, I do believe the SCOOP had a lot to do with me in my quest to stop chasing anything with a remote chance of coming in, which is always a good thing. We get to the final table, and the player in seat #1 was a nice guy that as we got talking during the hands, he's done just as well in $1/$2 NL as I have in the $3/$6 limit games, to the point he cashed out to take a WSOP shot at some satellites at Harrahs' in Atlantic City in the next week. As I told him there, I wish him the best of luck in his satellites, and if he does make it to the series to drop us a line here.
During that SNG (which I finished 2nd for $54 (+$43)), I got my seat at the ring game, and got up about a hour later (58 hands later to be precise), up $113 on the session. No real big hands here, just everything that was failing before was working here, picking up a $20 pot here, another $20 pot there. It now puts the overall line on $3/$6 at 3,206 hands and +$1,100 on 5.72BB/100.
I'll likely be back later with another post (I know 2 in a day), but I know I need to be more active and trying to do so. Until then, have a great day all.
One good deed deserves another... May 19th
Hello, everyone. Today's post is taking me a little longer than most to type out due to what I have done today, but that is perfectly fine. Before I get there, however, let me tie up a few loose ends.
One, LostSoul did make the money in the charity event, but not anywhere near what was hoped. His $28 payday does get used by the NTSAD, so every little bit helps.
Two, my SCOOP final line wasn't bad, even with nothing higher than a 70th place finish ($234 payout on that finish), and while I won't lie and wished I had a better result in the SCOOP series, compared to what it could be, it could of been a lot worse.
A nice side effect of the SCOOP series has got me to play more tight on the ring games, taking me from $1,234 to $1,607 yesterday on the $3/$6 tables. ($50 of it was a bonus that released, mind you). My original plan was to get to $1,300 yesterday with the aid of that bonus releasing, and work to $1,500 by Friday. I'm still debating as to where to go from here.
Now, that those are neat and tidy, lets get to the reason of my retyping this over and over, and that is the good deed I did today. Coming off the feelings from last nite's poker session, I figured the good karma of the rake in deserves a little "paying it forward", so to speak. When arriving at work today and finding out the local blood bank was here taking donations, it was just the perfect timing to go and "give the gift of life" as they say. Right now, after doing so, I got a band-aid on my finger where they pricked to test your blood before donating, and a nice wrapped contraction around where they withdrew the pint from on my typing hand. Regardless of those, mind ya, giving blood is something everyone who is able should do, as who knows one day the life you might save may be yours.
As I wrap this up today, remember one thing... As the old saying "No good deed goes unrewarded", the same is true in our game of poker. Letting your opponent pick up an uninteresting pot he thinks he's begging and pleading for can pay dividends for you later when he just can not believe you have anything. Rock on everyone until next time.
SCOOP Finale (Sunday Edition)... May 16th (Hmmm, let me think, yep live!)
5:20pm I'm out on the ME... gl to LS
